The Sea Shanty Choir

A shanty was a song that was ment to help sailors through hard work and other laborious duties and not as many think of seaman's enjoyment. A shanty is a melody consisting of solo stanzas and choir stanzas - sometimes even refrain. With the right song and a knowledgeable shanty man (choirmaster), these "shanties" encourage and even join forces for the working, aboard the large sailing vessels and thereby facilitate the work.


Shanties were called lake's poetry, but unlike terrestrial poetry shanty were songs were mostly composed continuously throughout the song by the lead shanty singer, and therefore required a sailor with a good humor and a vivid imagination, and at the same time knew what was going on board because that was what the songs were about. Shanties were as folktales all vouchsafed and sung far and wide. This meant that the poem was in thousands of different shanties. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the old shanties disappeared along with the great sailing ships, but Limfjordsmuseet brought them back with the museums own Sea Shanty Choir. They perform regularly at events.
